Skiing

Swim in the afternoon

The Cyprus Ski Club

skierSmSKY.gif (7537 bytes) The Troodos mountains spring to life not only in the middle of the hot summer as a cool refuge and holiday resort, but also in winter, as this is the skiing centre for Cyprus. Yes it is true, swim in the morning and ski in the afternoon , or vice versa of course.

Here you can take advantage of the pleasures of winter sports under the beautiful blue Mediterranean sky. Mount Olympus has several ski slopes and is fun for skiers and players in the snow of all levels and age.

There are some interesting and lovely mountain hotels, such as the Forest Park hotel, The Churchill Pinewood valley at Pedhoulas, famous for it's mountain water and the Hotel which was built to celebrate the Jubilee of King George V, as well as some good value lodges and guest houses, such as the aptly named Edelweiss, There are quite a few to be found in Platres, a popular resort in both summer and winter. We also now have  the Habitat, a health hotel. To see the selection and benefit from whatever deals are in place see the Cyprus hotels special offers section. For the full list of different types of places to stay, take a gander the Troodos section of Cyprus Hotels, or if you prefer self catering or agrotourism properties, see both agro tourism and Cyprus villas and apartments. There is a camp site in Troodos and a youth hostel is sometimes.

Skiing can be enjoyed on the slopes of Mount Olympus
at 1951 metres a.s.l., usually from the beginning of January to the end of March.   Mount Olympus is only 3km from the Troodos hill resort, 12km from Platres hill resort, and about an hours drive from the seaside towns of Limassol or Paphos or even the Capital Nicosia.

An International F.I.S. Skiing competition is organised every year by the Cyprus Ski Federation and takes place at the  Zeus Slalom Homologated Pits.

Cyprus is one of the few places in the world where on the same morning you can ski on the snow clad sides of Mount Olympus, and in less than an hour, swim or sunbathe at the coast.

You will find all the practical details below, have fun with the après ski fireplace.gif (1706 bytes) and don't forget your swimsuit.

Below is a report (in the winter ) of the snow conditions, depth of snow on the pistes and the road conditions for the drive up to Troodos. The road from Platres to the slopes is usually the only one we post conditions for as it rarely snows below Platres itself.

Ski shop and ski equipment

The ski shop is situated at "Sun valley" in Troodos, and is run by trained technicians. The shop provides skis, ski-boots and poles for up to 400 skiers for both alpine and cross-country. They also carry a number of snowboards.

It is advisable to either get up there early in the day, or book in advance, as although there is enough equipment on most days, at the weekends it tends to go more quickly, and the last served tend to be given the oldest equipment. If you want to plan a days skiing or trekking in the mountains, look here.

New scientific evidence published on the 22nd Feb, 2006 ( Journal of the American Medical Association - JAMA) showed that helmet use reduces head injuries by up to 60%. FIS strongly recommends the use of helmets for all alpine skiers and snowboarders regardless of skiing ability and age.

While the use of helmets is mandatory for competitors in FIS downhill, super-G and giant slalom as well as all Snowboarding events, many recreational alpine skiers and snowboarders do not wear a helmet and ski resorts do not typically require helmet use. Only very few countries have legislation requiring the use of helmets by recreational alpine skiers and snowboarders. At the same time, head injury is the most common cause of hospital visits and death among alpine skiers and snowboarders. In research conducted at the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences, there were 578 head injuries (17.6%) among the 3277 injured skiers investigated.
